frequently asked questions below.
FAQ
General
-
On which platforms does Ideogramic UML™
run?
Ideogramic UML™ currently runs on the Windows and
Linux platforms (see the requirements
for details). Please contact us if you are
interested in Ideogramic UML on other platforms.
-
What is the difference between the Desktop and Whiteboard
Editions of Ideogramic UML?
The Desktop Edition has been
optimized for use on normal Desktop PC's that are operated with a
mouse, and it uses traditional user interface elements such as a
toolbar and dialogboxes for creating diagrams. The Whiteboard
Edition, on the other hand, has been optimized for work on Electronic
Whiteboards, and uses gesture input for creating and editing
diagrams. Here
is a feature-level comparison
-
What is the difference between the free version and the
commercial version?
The free version has full functionality for
class diagrams, i.e. you can create new ones, load and edit
existing ones, etc. On diagrams of other type, you cannot create,
change, copy, or delete diagram elements. You can, however, load
all diagram types supported by Ideogramic UML™, and use the
model view and radar view to browse them.
Windows-specific
-
Why does my diagram look strange when I paste it into another
application?
Ideogramic Ideas™ uses Windows Metafiles
(on Windows 95, 98, and ME) or Windows Enhanced (Scalable)
Metafiles (on Windows NT4, 2000, and XP). Not all applications on
all versions of Windows support these formats equally well.
-
Why does my HTML documentation output for Ideogramic UML 2.2
and above not work properly?
You will need a web browser
capable of showing DHTML (Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.0 and above will suffice) and support for
SVG (for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Adobe SVG
Viewer 3.0 and above will suffice).
Load, Save, and XMI
-
Why can't I load XMI files?
Ideogramic UML™ supports XMI
version 1.0 and UML 1.3. In your XMI file, you can see both the
XMI version and the UML version.
-
Which CASE tools can Ideogramic UML™ export to?
Other CASE tools supporting XMI include Rational
Rose, Argo/UML, Together,
and MagicDraw UML.
By using Meta Integration® Model Bridge (MIMB),
Ideogramic UML™ models can be exported to and imported from a
large number of other tools.
-
How can I exchange data with Rational Rose?
Rational
Rose can import and export models in XMI format using a plug-in,
which is available for free download from Rational's homepage (download). Once
you have installed the plug-in, you can import and export files in
Rational Rose using the menus Tools->Import UML Model and
Tools->Export Model to UML, respectively. Please note that
the File->Export to XML and File->Import XML File
functions use an earlier version of the plug-in, which is not
supported by Ideogramic UML™.
-
Can I use Ideogramic UML™ with other input devices, such as
track-balls, or graphics tablets?
Ideogramic UML™ can
be used with any pointing device, which sends mouse events to
applications. Track-balls and graphics tablets work by sending
mouse events.
-
Why doesn't Ideogramic UML™ recognize what I draw?
Ideogramic UML™ only tries to recognize gestures in Gesture
Recognition mode. It is impossible, however, to achieve a
recognition rate of 100%. In order to maximize the recognition
rate, we restrict users to drawing gestures from a predefined set
of supported gestures. You can see the supported gestures in the
online documentation, which comes with Ideogramic UML™. If you
believe you are drawing the gestures correctly, you can switch to
Learn Gestures mode in Options->Mode->Learn
Gestures. In this mode, you can practice your gestures and get
feedback while you draw.
-
Can I create my own gestures?
Not at the moment. We
consider implementing gesture customization in a later version of
Ideogramic's software.
-
Does Ideogramic UML™ support handwriting
recognition?
Not at the moment.
Using Ideogramic UML™ on an Electronic Whiteboard
-
Which electronic whiteboards are supported?
If the
electronic whiteboard can be used with a projector and sends mouse
events to applications, it can be used with Ideogramic
UML. Ideogramic UML™ has been thoroughly tested with the Tool-Tribe, SMART Board, Mimio and eBeam electronic
whiteboards.
-
Why does Tool Tribe™ make Ideogramic UML™
slower?
You are probably using an older version of the
Tool Tribe software. You must use version 2.6 or later
to avoid this problem.
-
Why does Mimio™ make Ideogramic UML™ slower?
You
will need to use Mimio version 2.5 or newer. You can also
download Mimio version
1.11. Versions before 1.11 and between 1.11 and 2.5 had an
error, which caused too many events to be passed to
applications. (As a fix for this, you can, if you are running
Windows NT4 or 2000 and using one of these versions, give the
mimio.exe process the priority 'high' in the task list.)
-
Why does eBeam™ make Ideogramic UML™ slower?
You
are probably using an older version of the eBeam software.
Versions below v. 2.01 of the eBeam driver have an error, which
causes too many events to be passed to applications. The error is
fixed in eBeam
Moderator version 2.01 or later.
-
Can I use Ideogramic UML™ without a projector?
You can
use Ideogramic UML™ on any PC with a monitor. In order to use
Ideogramic UML™ on an electronic whiteboard, you need a
projector. Ideogramic UML™ recognizes and displays
transformed gestures, which is not
possible without a projector.
